India is positioning itself as a significant player in the esports landscape. On October 26, 2024, the Skillhub Online Games Federation (SOGF) partnered with the International Esports Federation (IESF) to announce India’s first international esports championship, the International Esports Masters, set for March 2025. This event aims to attract competitors from over 150 countries.
Global Growth of Esports
Esports has gained widespread global popularity, with major sports organizations recognizing its potential. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has planned an annual esports series, while the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) included esports as a medal event in the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games. This increasing acceptance solidifies esports as a legitimate sport worldwide.
Event Specifics
The International Esports Masters will mark India’s debut in hosting an international esports tournament. The final choice of host city will depend on sponsorship commitments from various state governments. SOGF President Shankar Aggarwal emphasized that local sponsorship could be a deciding factor in the event location.
Focus on Club-Based Competition
In addition, IESF will host its first club-based tournament in India, a shift from the typical focus on national teams. According to IESF General Secretary Boban Totovski, the aim is to involve both Tier 1 and Tier 2 clubs, fostering high-level competition and community engagement over profit.
