Chess: Anish Sarkar, 3-Year-Old From Bengal, Becomes Youngest-Ever FIDE-Rated Chess Player

Anish Sarkar recently became the youngest-ever FIDE-rated chess player with an impressive Elo rating of 1555. At just three years, eight months, and 19 days old, he achieved this remarkable feat, debuting at the 1st All Bengal Rapid Rating Open 2024 and scoring 5 points out of 11 games. Shortly after, Anish had an incredible opportunity to compete against Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi, India’s top player and world No. 4, in a rapid rating tournament. Initially not qualified, a last-minute opening allowed him to participate as a substitute, giving him invaluable exposure to high-level competition and sparking his ambition to secure his first official rating.

Following his match with Erigaisi, Anish tackled another challenge in the West Bengal State Under-9 Open Rating 2024, achieving a strong score of 5.5 out of 8 and placing 24th out of 140 participants. He demonstrated determination by defeating two rated players in the final rounds, an impressive accomplishment for someone so young. To pursue his FIDE rating, Anish continued competing in rated tournaments to meet the requirements, culminating in the West Bengal State Under-13 Open Rating 2024
